MeasureSquare alternative: how Squaro compares for builder plans
MeasureSquare (often searched as Measure Square) is established flooring takeoff and estimating software with a Windows desktop program, a mobile app and a web CRM. Squaro does a narrower job: it reads a builder's plan set and selections and builds the takeoff from the printed dimensions for you to check. This page sets out how each one works, what each costs where that is published, and which suits which kind of flooring business.
What MeasureSquare is
MeasureSquare is headquartered in Pasadena, California, with an Australia and New Zealand office in Perth and a UK office in Manchester. Its website lists these main products:
- MeasureSquare 8, a Windows desktop program for takeoff and estimating. It measures floors, walls and ceilings, plans seams and roll cuts, handles tile patterns, and produces PDF reports with product usage, waste, cut sheets and seam diagrams. It exports to Excel and to Roll Master, QFloors and Comp-U-Floor.
- MeasureSquare Mobile for iPad, iPhone and Android tablets, for measuring and quoting on site with a laser distance meter, including seam diagrams and customer signatures.
- MeasureSquare CRM, a web based system that runs from lead to takeoff, bid and production: bids built from the takeoff, job costing, installer scheduling and progress billing, with integrations including QuickBooks Online and Xero.
- MeasureSquare Stone & Tile, for countertop, slab and tile layouts.
It is a mature product with a wide feature set, and its plans include phone and email support and training material.
How takeoff works in MeasureSquare
In MeasureSquare 8 you import the plan as a PDF or image file, set the blueprint scale, and draw each room with the mouse or keypad, using templates, curves, arcs and holes for awkward shapes. Its help centre says to calibrate against a known measurement, such as a door, when a plan has no dimensions to scale from. As you draw, its auto-estimate recalculates product quantities and lineal lengths, and the roll layout places seams and cuts that you can then move.
The Commercial plan adds AI tools. MeasureSquare says its AI Takeoff uses deep learning and computer vision to detect room areas, doors and windows, and that AI Takeoff 2.0 draws rooms and walls, adds doors and labels room names, giving "a clean, ready-to-review layout". Its AI Plan Analyzer summarises a plan set and extracts materials. On the published price list, PDF takeoff starts at the Multi-family plan and the AI tools appear on the Commercial plan only.
How takeoff works in Squaro
Squaro starts from the builder's PDF working drawings and the selections or colour schedule. It reads each room's size from the dimension strings printed on the drawing, never from the scale of the drawing. Each room shows the page and the dimension text it used, and readings it is unsure of are marked low confidence so you know where to look.
Your own rules are then applied: doorway allowances, robes, kickboard recesses, stairs with an extra allowance, waste, rounding up to whole packs or roll lengths, and trims per opening, priced from your price book. You check every line before the quote PDF goes to the builder. The flooring takeoff software page shows the process in more detail.

When MeasureSquare is the better choice
- You estimate commercial or multi-family work and want to draw and control every room, seam and cut yourself.
- You need seam diagrams, roll cut sheets, tile patterns, walls, 3D views or stone and tile layouts. Squaro does not cover tile or stone and has no seam diagrams.
- Much of your work is measured on site. The mobile app works with laser distance meters and captures customer signatures on site.
- You want CRM, job costing, installer scheduling and progress billing from the same vendor, linked to QuickBooks Online or Xero.
- You quote from plans in feet and inches, which Squaro does not read yet.
- You want a long established product with a public price list and a free trial you can start today.
When Squaro fits
- Most of your quotes come from volume or custom builder plan sets, with selections that decide which rooms get which product.
- The slow part of your day is reading drawings and selections, not drawing shapes.
- You want every room's figure tied to the printed dimension it came from, so checking is quick.
- You want your own allowances, waste and pack rounding applied the same way on every quote, whoever does the estimate.
Squaro's limits, plainly: it is in early access, reads metric plans only for now (feet and inches are planned), is not a site measuring app, and does not do CRM, ERP, inventory, accounting or showroom POS. Your estimator stays responsible for every quote. The flooring quoting software page and the FAQ have the detail.
Switching, or using both
For quoting builder plan sets, Squaro can replace MeasureSquare; for CRM, job costing, seam planning, tile or site measures it cannot. A contractor can quote builder plan sets in Squaro and keep MeasureSquare for site measures on the mobile app, commercial jobs with heavy seam planning, or the CRM and job costing once a job is won. There is no connection between the two today, so a won job is entered from the Squaro quote.
A fair test is to run three plan sets you have already quoted by hand through both, and compare areas, packs and totals line by line. The flooring estimating software guide sets out that test in full.
Common questions
Does MeasureSquare have AI takeoff?
Yes. Its price list includes AI-powered takeoff and an AI Plan Analyzer on the Commercial plan of MeasureSquare 8. The AI detects rooms, walls and doors on the drawing for you to review.
What does MeasureSquare cost in Australia?
Its main price list is in US dollars per user. The Australian site has a pricing page, but it showed no figures we could read when we checked, so ask its Perth office for local pricing.
